Student Jobs and Internship Opportunities on the Student Academic Success Services Team

The Student Academic Success Services team at ECU provides various peer educator roles, enabling students to develop workplace readiness skills while contributing to campus life. Working with us, you’ll garner invaluable experience guiding peers toward academic excellence within a supportive environment that fosters personal and professional growth. Joining the SASS student success team presents opportunities to refine leadership abilities while significantly influencing the academic journey of fellow students.

 

Peer Academic Success Coaches/Mentors (starting Fall 2024)


Coaching support for incoming freshmen in a success learning community at ECU. As a Success Coach, you will meet with two to three assigned students to help support their first year at ECU.

 

Academic Success Coach Qualifications:

  1. Have a cumulative GPA above a 3.0.
  2. Successfully completed 30 credit hours at ECU.
  3. Be a full time ECU student.
  4. Have excellent communication skills.
  5. Be able to work with a diverse population.

Please note: Selection will be based upon the application, recommendation forms, academic transcript review, and an interview. Paid positions are limited to students with previous Pirate Academic Success Center experience. All Academic Success Coaches start in a volunteer capacity.

Academic Tutors in the Pirate Academic Success Center

These positions are open to all majors and involve tutoring undergraduate students. PASC Tutors and Study Group Leaders conduct daily subject-specific tutoring sessions with individuals or small groups of students. Sessions occur during regular business hours (8:00-5:00) and are designed to provide academic support, ongoing guidance, and periodic encouragement to students. 

Academic Tutor Qualifications:

  1. Be enrolled as a student at ECU.
  2. Have earned an A in the course they wish to tutor at ECU.
  3. Have a minimum GPA of a 3.0.
  4. Have successfully completed at least 30 credit hours at ECU with a 3.0 GPA or above OR have successfully completed 1 semester at ECU earning a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  5. Have faculty recommendations on file for each tutored course.
  6. Complete all tutor training requirements as applicable.

Undergraduate Tutors earn between $10.00 and $12.00 per hour, Graduate Tutors earn $13.00 per hour.

Peer Enrollment Coaches (April – August 2024)

Peer Enrollment Coaches contact incoming, admitted students, and assist them in navigating university processes and help extend a welcoming support as students prepare to enter ECU for the first time. Peer Enrollment Coaches also assist with outreach during summer orientation sessions. As a peer enrollment coach, you become the first step towards welcoming new Pirates into the family that is Pirate Nation. When you think about your experience as a first-time pirate, what were things you wish you knew? This is your opportunity to give back to first year Pirates! These students will be thankful for your help and support!

Coaches work 10 hours per week in the month of April and 15 to 20 hours during the summer months (May-August). Peer Enrollment Coaches earn $11.50 per hour.

Peer Enrollment Coach Qualifications:

  1. Strong communication skills.
  2. 2.5 GPA and above.
  3. Willingness to help other students.
  4. Registered for Fall 2024 semester.

Retention Coaches (April – August 2024)

Retention Coaches contact current students and assist them in navigating academic success while attending ECU. Retention coaches also help students get registered, support their academic decision making, and assist in establishing connections to campus resources. Retention coaches are a part of a more dynamic support team that helps students navigate through different aspects of life at East Carolina. We are always looking to fill the team with Pirates with a wide variety of experience and skills.

Retention coaches work 15 to 20 hours a week. Positions start in April and extend to Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. Undergraduate retention coaches earn $12 per hour and Graduate retention coaches earn $13 per hour.

Communication Internships (Summer 2024 and Fall 2024)

Working in a cutting-edge field within higher education is a thrilling experience, offering constant exposure to innovation and the latest advancements. This dynamic environment cultivates creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability, preparing individuals for future challenges while contributing to the advancement of knowledge and society.
