Success Research

The SASS Connect, Support, Serve, Succeed student success model is grounded in the work of Strayhorn (2012) and Coghill (2017), highlighting the impact sense of belonging plays in the post-secondary success of marginalized student groups. The model has yielded positive outcomes with at risk student groups including military affiliated, first generation, neurodiverse, Pell grant recipients, males, males of color, transfer students, and students in academic difficulty.

Strayhorn, T. L. (2018). College students’ sense of belonging: A key to educational success for all students. Routledge.

Coghill, E. M. H. (2017). The impact of academic employment on the sense of belonging and engagement of military learners on the college campus.

Applying the Student Success model, SASS programs and services comprise a comprehensive network of supports designed around the four student success pillars. Implementation of the Student Success Model has yielded successful outcomes for students at East Carolina University.

SASS services and programs support the entire student journey.

Working collaboratively with campus partners, we employ the holistic 4-pillar student success model: Connect, Support, Serve, Succeed.

Connect: Reinforcing sense of belonging, and establishing engagement with peers, staff, and faculty.

Support: Focused efforts on student wellbeing and establishing connections to campus resources.

Serve: Increasing campus involvement, campus service, employment and volunteer opportunities.

Succeed: Supporting student academic achievement and student career and professional readiness.
